8 layered outfits for winter warmth and high style

Ah, the layered outfit. For women, layering stylish pieces can add nuance and sophistication to your look. But when you’re doubling up on clothes, there’s a fine line between high style and sloppy or bulky. No doubt you have seen a few layering misses, such as the crazy, complicated runway looks that no normal person could possibly wear.

In those moments, you may question what you know about how to layer or wonder how a girl can stay stylish under the weight of sweaters, tops, and trenches.

Not to worry. Your layering instincts are on points. To help remind you, here’s a look at eight layered outfits plus a few style tips to keep you warm and comfortable all season long.

Slip dress over jeans

Pair a slinky slip dress with a sharp pair of straight-leg denim jeans. The contrasting fabrics make a big statement without getting bulky. If it’s cold outside, you can add a fitted long-sleeved top or bodysuit beneath the dress.

Knit vest over fitted, long-sleeve top

A chunky knit vest over a button-down top combines contrasting shapes and textures. By keeping the under-layer lightweight, the vest can show off its comfortable style without looking messy. Take this outfit to the next level with a delicate necklace that rests above the vest’s neckline.

Crop sweater with blazer

A crop sweater over belted, high-waist pants is a chic look. You can add to it in the winter with a structured blazer over the top. This is also a great style choice if you’re conservative about showing your midriff.

Double button-downs

Try pairing two button-down tops of different weights — something chambray and a silk blouse, for example. You can tie the lower layer at the waist to add shape and wear the outer layer open, as a cardigan. If you need more warmth, you can also a trench coat.

Jacket plus coat

Team a fitted leather jacket, button-down shirt, and a duster for another chic look. The leather (or faux leather) jacket adds a good bit of structure and texture, which complements the looser fit of a duster nicley.

Belt over shirt and sweater

A collared shirt under a heavy cable knit sweater is a classic combo, but it can leave you feeling unkept. Fix that with a belt or scarf over the sweater at your waist.

Tunic and trousers

Leggings are the usual anchor for a long, flowy tunic, but you can upgrade to a more polished pairing with trousers instead. Depending on your body type, you may prefer a scarf belt with this combo. Opt for a lightweight tunic and heavier, crisp trousers with a straight leg. You can add a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath the tunic for extra warmth and style.

Sheer over tank

Sheer layers are having their time in the spotlight and you can work this to your advantage. Try a sheer blouse over a tank top. You can add your favorite outerwear, such as a blazer or another oversized top. This is a nice transitional outfit, because you can take away layers on those random warm fall days.

Layering style tips

Master the art of layering and create your own outfit ideas with these pro styling conventions:

  • Opt for fitted layers close to your body. The best layered outfits often begin with a tank or tee that sits close to your skin. Adding a roomier shape on top creates dimension and flow.
  • Mix up your hemlines. Show off different hemlines with each layer. It can be unflattering to have multiple layers end at the same place across your body.
  • Build on neutrals. Unless you’re very savvy mixing patterns, stick to neutrals or nearly monochrome layering pieces. A combo of slightly different shades of the same color makes for a high-impact outfit. You can add a pop of color with a fun bracelet or necklace.
  • Add textures. You can take your layered looks to another level by featuring contrasting textures.

Layers for style and warmth

When the temperature drops, it’s time to revisit and update your layering strategy. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different textures, hemlines, and necklines. You can also combine sameness — two button-down shirts or two jackets, for example. This trend is forgiving, especially if you have some chic belts or scarves on hand to define your waist. Have fun with it.
